Special Education
Special Education Support Services assists districts and charter schools as they implement the major components of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and provide services to students with disabilities. These support services include ongoing technical support and professional development in the following specific areas:

ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance for service providers of students with ADHD. This includes assistance in recognizing the characteristics of inattention & hyperactivity, and effective instructional and management strategies.
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance for all areas of Assistive Technology. An assistive technology lab is available for previewing assistive technology equipment and/or checking out devices for evaluation purposes.
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance for families and professionals working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in a variety of school settings.
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance that builds capacity for staff to act as behavior resources for their district and/or campus.
ESC-20 provides information and resources about Child Find, Evaluation, and State Performance Indicators 11 & 12.
ESC-20 provides information about this multi-agency group comprised of public and private child-service providers that meets on a regular basis to review service needs and provide limited case management services for students who have multiple personal and family needs.
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance to programs serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including assisting programs meet the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing across the continuum of placement options.
ESC-20 provides resources and information about disproportionate representation of subpopulations of students with disabilities. Training and technical assistance is available to assist districts in addressing issues related to disproportionality in special education.
ESC-20 provides resources, training and technical assistance for evaluators. Quarterly contact group meetings for LSSP’s and Educational Diagnosticians are also provided.
ESC-20 provides professional development and resources to assist members of an Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee in developing an Individualized Education Program for a student with a disability through the use of facilitation.
ESC-20 provides training, technical assistance and resources for complying with state and federal regulations, state monitoring systems and federal funding requirements. Monthly special education director meetings are hosted to share all relevant information.
ESC-20 provides training, technical assistance, and resources that support programs serving students with low incidence disabilities (severe and profound cognitive disabilities, medically fragile, deaf/blind).
ESC-20 provides application information and administers awarded funds for Non-Educational Community-Based Support Services intended to support families of students with disabilities who are at risk of being placed in a residential facility.
ESC-20 provides resources and training opportunities for parents and professionals that have or work with children with special needs.
ESC-20 provides training and resources on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.
Education Service Center, Region 20 works in collaboration with Texas Education Agency (TEA) to coordinate the 20-region Progress in the General Curriculum (PGC) Network, which focuses on all students with disabilities being involved in and showing progress in the general curriculum.
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance for teachers of students with disabilities ages 3-5 years (birth - 5 years for students with visual and/or hearing impairments).
ESC-20 provides training and resources for special education related services. A related services cooperative is also available to assist in finding related service providers to support students with disabilities.
ESC-20 provides training and technical support related to inclusive services for students with disabilities to gain access to the general curriculum. These supports provide strategies so students with disabilities are actively involved and progress within the general curriculum.
ESC-20 provides training, technical support, resources and information about speech therapy for students who have communication disorders.
New information is now available for the Accommodated and Alternate versions of the The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™).
ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance to district transition contacts and vocational adjustment coordinators in the development and implementation of effective transition services and inter-agency collaboration.
ESC-20 provides Supplementary Services for the Visually Impaired (SSVI) in accordance with the comprehensive Regional Plan for Serving Students with Visual Impairments. Specialized training is offered and technical assistance is available upon request.
