Charter Schools

2011 - 2012 Charter School Executive Meetings

In 1991, several states passed legislation that permitted the creation of public schools known as "charter schools." These schools were often started by parents, educators, and community leaders to provide choice in the public school system, as well as encourage innovative teaching practices. Currently, 25 states have laws promoting charter schools.

Texas Charter Schools
The state of Texas has awarded a maximum of 214 charters throughout the state. Prior to being awarded a charter, the requesting group must complete the application process, which includes a description of its program, students served, the methods of assessment, and ways to measure student progress.

Charter Schools Regulations
Some of the regulations governing traditional public schools have been waived for charters; however, charter schools are still required to follow federal and state law regarding the education of all children, and must participate in the state-developed assessment program.

Education Service Center, Region 20
Charter schools are considered "open enrollment public schools of choice" and have access to the same programs and services as their traditional public school counterparts. Please refer to the Products and Services section of the ESC-20 web site for a description of the services available and contact names for each service offered at Education Service Center, Region 20.
