well I'm a doctor Duane M. Estes and I am working on my 90 first year.  As far as I'm concerned the greatest event in education during my tenure was the passage of the legislation Human Service Centers checkredi significant leadership on the part of the Texas Education Agency and the support of the superintendents of schools for that legislation to pass so from my point there was a significant event where one of them most major early on initiatives that occurred was creating a system to provide technology are school districts to use in their various functions for example when we got started in that Arena one of them a picture of projects we had was being able to use technology to report grades to parents so report cards via technology was new and actually it was not easy to pull off to begin with Texas Education Agency was interested in us developing vet assistance in the helped us a lot and so we were earlier earlier early developers of technology. A lot of the things that's ghost it for granted now and so that was one of our major accomplishments we did it not only for Region 20 but we did it for the whole state of Texas all the school districts I came in at 39 years old first female director and so a lot of people were watching just to see what I was going to do and so high I knew I had a support from the board I had a great staff and we were just looking for opportunities to do things and so fortunately we were able to do some of those it was really exciting starting the television operation in partnership with cayenne starting alternative certification conversions of the day processing systems Information Technology systems using current language it was fun it was really a place to learn and to try out new things environment it is C20 is unlike anything I've ever experienced in most people haven't been and I I think some of it was intentional sign and some of it was just accidental but it was all culminated in the most remarkable place to work though the environment is so warm like a some told someone this morning that dumb it's like coming. the center is like coming back home those relationships are so strong that it is just amazing place to work and I didn't do it but I was sure how blessed to be able to work in that environment was here to see it say it to me esc20 has a long history of having dedicated and talented individuals come to work in this organization if you think back to 1966 when dr. Estes was here it really started back then that was the tradition that ESC 20 place that people wanted to be and we continue that through today and I think we'll continue that path forward because ultimately that's our brand we put great Educators out in front of other Educators in our region and really have it opportunity to impact student performance in the lives of students across this region and that's done through a talented Workforce I think one of the things that makes esc20 Stand Out is the awesome service that we provide to the clients that we so when you think about Education Service Center first thing you'll notice that services are middle name Lee really do take that to heart are number one core belief here is servisfirst and we talked about that a lot we look for examples of it we really expect that and we hire for it so we hire people who are like-minded and it really believe in service to others regardless of what you do and ESC 20. Answering phones if you're working statements if you're in developing software Whoodle professional development if you're providing technical assistance to a client service is the one thing that runs through all of that and we really have a great reputation for service when I came in was just a couple of years after nclb No Child Left Behind and soda we're just beginning to see the impact of that and those new requirements and so those words that we all knows terms that were all so endeared with adequate yearly progress highly-qualified and it's all these were new things and and for the first time Texas we're going to have to accountability systems and it made us take a real look at and make significant changes to our alternative certification programs you know something is very significant I think in this ties back to significant events was Hurricane Katrina and we forget the impact from that because with 50,000 folks dropped in on San Antonio for a weekend at the governor wanted all of those thousands of school children to be in school on Tuesday morning after Labor Day and and what that did set the region 22 the center of coordination for the city and county which was cute and so then you look a few years down the road later when the city and county put together a very nice and very formal emergency Operation Center there was a desk there specifically for because we had assumed the role of coordination I think to Tejon in on on one set of things was all that the activities we did around the United Way that allowed us to be a significant contributor to our larger Community but we did a lot of things social in nature but they're also fundraising there were just fine and brought us together when I got to throw out first pitch at missions game my son drop me off and said dad you know if it doesn't make it to the catcher then you get to walk home but it made it I got to ride on a Zamboni we thought that sumo wrestling was a great idea outside of you know one concussion and a broken leg but I think the variety of activities and the opportunity for number status and Leadership roles if they might not have otherwise and it even folks it it moved up in the center over time that we got a chance to see their potential because they just volunteered an offer their time to help what are the things I wanted to talk about was the living Science Center recreated the living Science Center and actually I think we wrote a grant to the federal government have been punched to get it in the living Science Center we provided all kinds of living animals districts could check them out and they found it to be worthwhile service so worthwhile addition to their instructional materials and the wonderful thing about it is that we started that I believe we're the title 19 probably 66-67 and to my knowledge as far as I know it's still exist what makes that a wonderful event is that not every title 3 project in the world that got funded but this one lived on continued got other funding and it's still living and providing services and that would be in 67 minutes 3343 almost 50 years ago that we started it I think they'll always be a role for service centers because I think the leadership is creative enough to hey where the gaps are in terms of what schools can do for themselves and what they need help doing and so I'm I believe that service centers will be strong as leaders and providing high-quality support for districts all across the state the need for service centers will will never diminish I see that continue to increase and as our student population we see more challenges with the adult population that we serve the same way the number of students the restriction on resources and until the needle be greater than ever other reasons that it's been great and will when does The Great is the continuous leadership that it said they haven't had a lot of changes in liters and they let years and years of continuous leadership that's drive-in movies near me and streaming out and it'll be true in the next 10 to 20 years there's a there's a nice Buzz around the culture of this organization in people know the types people that work here and they want to work alongside those individuals so I think we'll continue to focus on employee talent and really do a good job of attracting the best and the brightest so they can come and work with the Educators across the Region 3 ESC 20 is currently in my pee at least one of the top leading you a season and mopping it is by far and away the most prominent ESC not just in the state but in the nation if you go look across the add States and people talk about education service agencies in those that perform well San Antonio ESC 20 in San Antonio is always going to be in that conversation it's been that way because of the hard work in the Magnificent job the employees do here and I'll say this the one thing we do well as we hire great people and we turn them loose and let them blue and that his pay huge dividends for the ESC 20 so I see ESC 20 in the shoe sure regardless of what happened state or national wide is going to be and remain one of the leading into T's
