  • Guided Reading in a Bilingual Classroom K-1

    Research consistently demonstrates that the more children know about language and literacy before they arrive to school, the better equipped they are to succeed in reading. During this engaging session participants will learn how to organize a meaningful guided reading lesson in a bilingual classroom to support student independent reading. Handouts, demonstration, engaging activities and leveled books will use to achieve the objective.

    Phonological Awareness as a crucial component in the reading process of Bilingual students

    Phonological Awareness is the ability to detect the sounds in language without thinking about the meaning of what is said. This session will provide hands-on ideas and activities to help bilingual teachers to development phonological awareness in children. Teachers will learn practical and effective activities across all the six levels in the phonological Awareness Continuum. Handouts, demonstration, and hands-on activities will be used throughout this professional learning presentation.

    Education CAFE Community Action Forums for Excellence - A Network of Families Transforming Schools

    IDRA’s Family Leadership in Education framework is premised on the assertion that families are the strongest long-term advocates for quality public education. Families, treated with dignity and respect, exert leadership that transforms schools to the benefit of all children. Education CAFEs have flourished in Spanish-speaking colonias of south Texas where families are advocating for excellent dual-language programs for all children. The model is now being disseminated in the state and region.

    Data, Depth & Rounds, Oh My!

    Laser in on a targeted plan, that integrates data rooms, sets a common language of instructional depth and rigor in a two-way dual language school. A focused budget, streamlined professional development, as well as building capacity in instructional leadership and staff were our priorities. After three years of implementing the plan, our dual language students continue to outscore their peers with similar demographics of poverty and academic challenges on local and state assessments.

    Technology for Second Language Development

    In this session, participants will explore ways to incorporate technology that is practical, easy-to-use, and targeted to second language development. Direct connections will be made between digital fluency and incorporation of the ELPS (English Language Proficiency Standards). Participants will be provided with guided activities that allow them to dive into preparing the use of technology in their classrooms.

    Engaging Students in a Mathematics Dual Language Classroom PK-2

    Participate in PK-2 hands-on activities that students will enjoy and remember. In this interactive presentation, we will discuss math conversations in a PK-2 classroom to explore how to target various aspects of the ELD standards. At the end of this math session, participants will learn new strategies to implement in the dual language classroom right away. Ideas will be applicable but can me modified. Teacher made materials and samples will be given away at the end of the session.

    Vocabulary Acquisition in an Elementary Dual Language Classroom

    Educators are searching for strategies to help students acquire vocabulary words using various methods. In this session, you will leave with strategies that will enable you to help your students be successful in a Dual Language classroom. Various strategies will be given to ensure educators use them immediately upon return to their classroom. Educators will be able to use effective vocabulary strategies for supporting Dual Language Learners.

    Biliteracy - A Challenge for the Hispanic Learner

    The purpose of this session is to provide greater understanding of the differences and similarities between the English and Spanish languages. Topics to be discussed range from vocabulary for the classroom to the use of cognates and anglicisms and from the use of the written accent to the use of idiomatic expressions and popular sayings. Ample interaction and small group hands-on activities will be provided as well as the opportunity to assess one's own biliteracy challenges.

    TELPAS DATA: Making it Happen !

    The use of data is essential in education. Presenters will share the successful implementation of integrating TELPAS data with a purpose in the campus data room. Presenters will share how it has helped build an effective instructional program for English Learners while empowering all stakeholders. In addition, understanding the collaboration that must occur between compliance and instruction will be discussed as well as the Instructional Components of an effective Bilingual Program.

    Presenting our district's experience with a TEA on-site visit for Bilingual/ESL. We want to share our experience before, during and after the audit.

    Choosing Multicultural Books for the Bilingual and ESL Classrooms

    This session will discuss the characteristics of authentic multicultural books, and will provide tools that teachers can use when selecting the books that they will use in the bilingual or ESL classroom. Teachers will be able to identify sources for finding and vetting books that will more appropriately represent the students in their classrooms.

    Depth + Data = Distinctions

    Explore the success of the two-way dual language program that implements highly effective instructional strategies that have been incorporated into the classrooms which include, but are not limited to Depth of Knowledge, Depth of Complexity, Integration of non-transferrable skills, and Sheltered Instruction. STAAR and TELPAS data results will reflect the success of the impact of high quality teaching and program fidelity, thus resulting in increased student achievement for ELL students.

    Hitting the Target!

    This session will equip teachers with effective strategies to reach the 90% target language goal in the classroom. From engaging activities to classroom setup, come and learn how to establish a student-centered classroom in the target language!

    Mexican Educational System

    I worked for The Mexican Department of Education for many years and I had the opportunity to participate in the Binational Migrant Program from 2011 to 2015. During those trips I could see closely the big challenges teachers face here in their journey helping ELL students. By learning about the Mexican Educational System we can add a better understanding and help to our students.

    Building the Bridge Between Home and the Classroom

    As a Kinder Bilingual Teacher, one of my obstacles was finding a way to help parents feel more connected to their child’s education. In this workshop, I will share some of the activities I’ve done in my classroom that allows parents to participate in ways that doesn’t include cutting, pasting, or laminating for me. I will also demonstrate a few “Take Home Activity Backpacks” I have introduced in my classroom this year.

    This presentation will highlight an Intermediate 5th and 6th grade campus and how it's Dual Language Program is "Soaring to Excellence". Content area teachers will present their strategies used during planning, instructional implementation, and content area alignment that have helped grow their Dual Language Program.

    Overcoming Communication Challenges in Bilingual/ DL settings

    Come and learn some strategies to overcome communication challenges with students, parents, and even staff through awareness and reflection on what it means to be in a second language environment. We will be using group reflections, brainstorming, and collaboration among the attendees, and you will leave with practical ideas to implement effectively communication skills in your workplace.

    Implementing the Writing Process in the Dual Language/Immersion classroom

    Presenters will explain the writing process and offer practical methods for applying it in the classroom to help students become proficient writers.

    Parent Involvement in the Dual Language Classroom

    Through this session we will be explaining how to be successful in getting parents to be involved in school activities and their kids education. We will be presenting activities done in our campus targeting specifically the Dual Language parents which usually are the ones that for different reasons do not support this activities.

    If you are interested in expanding your memory capacity, this is the session for you. In this session we will understand how important is working memory for students and how it affects learning if is not trained and maintained.     Are we positioning English Learners to become college and career ready? Conventional curricula leave a gap in the academic skills of English Learners.
