Bexar PREP Cohort 5, 2017-2018

Cohort 5 Participants

Day 1: Leadership Framework and Overview

The session will include an overview of Bexar PREP, review of case study from application, education philosophy, leadership models/styles, overview of resources, leadership framework, vision/ mission/beliefs, and change. Additionally, participants will meet the other cohort members and begin to build their new professional learning community.

Day 2: Creating Cultural Responsiveness and Perspectives on Leadership

Cultural responsiveness is a critical concept for leaders and is essential in urban schools. What is it and how do you achieve it? This session will include multiple perspectives in defining this concept. Dr. Kimberly McLeod will share her research findings and a number of case studies with participants. The afternoon session will begin with a student panel consisting of high school age students from across the region. The day will wrap up with panel discussions with San Antonio area practitioners. These discussions will include area superintendents, campus principals, and Institutes of Higher Education faculty from San Antonio area Universities. Discussions will focus on the unique attributes of effective leaders.

Day 3: Effective Practices Addressing the Unique Needs of Urban Schools

This session will focus on effective practices in urban schools. In the morning PREP participants will have an opportunity to visit an urban school in Bexar County. The campus visit will include a welcome and overview by the campus principal and leadership team, a campus tour, classroom visits, and opportunities to talk with teachers and students. The afternoon session will include a debrief of the morning visits with a focus on lessons learned and best practices that were observed.

Day 4: Alignment and Data

The morning session will focus on the use of data with an emphasis on the unique role of nominal data, teaching data and learning data. In addition, participants will receive an overview of the alignment walk process. The afternoon will be spent conducting campus level alignment walks to analyze alignment of instructional practices, district scope & sequence, and alignment.

Day 5: Transforming School Culture

The focus on this half-day session is school culture. We will visit a large comprehensive urban high school campus in Bexar county and experience the school culture first hand. The visit will include a school tour and a visit with a number of students who have experienced the shift in culture first hand. We will explore the concept of school culture in theory and explore successful practices related to the intentional development of school culture. Additionally, each PREP participant will receive their “Shadow a principal for a day” assignments.

Between days 5 and 6 each PREP participant will complete their “Shadow a principal for a day” with an urban leader in a different school district, but within the same grade band.

Day 6: Forwarding the Action and Celebration

This session will provide a venue for the application of many of the concepts and learning that took place over the course of the year. We will engage in Shadow Principal debrief and discussion. Additionally, we will spend some time discussing various Leadership Frameworks, professional portfolios, and the interview process. The participant’s superintendents, principals and other district leaders are encouraged to attend the morning reception and celebration.
